DT-54 is a mass-produced Soviet tracked agricultural diesel tractor for general purpose.
Equipping the SHTZ-NATI tractor, which had a voracious 1-MA kerosene engine, with a more economical diesel engine was planned back in 1941, but the war and the evacuation of both main tractor factories of the USSR to Altai delayed the process. Nevertheless, the new D-54 engine, which used 70% of the parts from the old one and consumed 40% less cheaper fuel, was ready in 1944. A new 5-speed gearbox was also developed, but there was nowhere to produce it until the end of the 1940s, when Stalingrad and Kharkov were restored.
